The Chawton House Library Series

Deadline:
Website: http://www.pickeringchatto.com/series/chawton_house_library

The Chawton House Library Series republishes newly-edited rare texts from the Library's collection of over 9,000 volumes in three main strands: Novels; Travel Writings; and Memoirs. The series is published by Pickering and Chatto.

Several forthcoming sets are planned for the Travels strand as well as editions of novels and we are seeking editors for both of these.

We plan two sets of volumes by women travellers in North Africa, one set to include Miss Tully, Narrative of a 10 Years Residence at Tripoli (1816), Barbara Hofland, The Young Pilgrim; or, Alfred Campbell's Return to the East (1826) and Sarah Wilson, Belzoni (1825); the other to comprise Catherine Hutton's Tour of Africa 1819-21.

We are also seeking an editor or editors for a set of volumes on Iberia, to comprise Marianne Baillie, Lisbon (1824), Lady Henrietta Chatterton, The Pyrenees (1843), and Sarah Ellis, Summer and Winter in the Pyrenees (1843). Two further sets are to be devoted to France after Napoleon, the first consisting of Marianne Baillie, First Impressions on a Tour upon the Continent, 1819; Frances Jane Carey, Journal of a Tour in France in the Years 1816 and 1817, 1823; Elizabeth Strutt Byron, Six Weeks on the Loire, 1833 and Anne Carter, Letters from a Lady to her sister during a Tour to Paris (1814). The second is to consist of Fanny Trollope's Paris and the Parisians in 1835 and Sydney Owenson, Lady Morgan's France (1817).

Among the novels for which we are seeking editors are the following: Elizabeth Sophia Tomlins, The Victim of Fancy (1787); Ann Gomersall, The Citizen (1790); Mary Robinson's Vancenza (1792) and Hubert de Sevrac (1796); and Sarah Green's The Private History of the Court of England (1808) and Romance readers and romance writers (1810).

We are also happy to consider proposals for editions of other important volumes in the Chawton collection.

For further details or to discuss a proposal please contact either of the general editors of the series, Dr Stephen Bending or Dr Stephen Bygrave.
